Russia has carried out a sweeping wave of ballistic missile strikes on Ukrainian cities, killing at least five people and wounding more than thirty-five, according to officials. The attacks struck the country's two largest urban centres and marked one of the heaviest barrages since the full-scale invasion began.

In the north-eastern city of Kharkiv, four people were killed and nineteen injured when a postal terminal on the suburbs was hit; the dead were men aged between twenty-four and sixty-two. In the capital, Kyiv, one person died and sixteen were hurt as residential and non-residential buildings, including a supermarket and a dormitory, were damaged by blasts and fires. Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said firefighters were battling blazes at two warehouses.
President Volodymyr Zelensky described the raid on Kyiv as one of the most massive ballistic attacks on the capital since the start of the war. Ukrainian air defences shot down eighteen of forty-one missiles over the city and intercepted one hundred and eight drones, though the volume of incoming fire overwhelmed parts of the network. The latest strikes involved Iskander and hypersonic Zircon missiles as well as one hundred and twenty-five drones.
Even as Russian missiles fell, Ukraine pressed its own campaign against targets inside Russia. Zelensky said security service units hit three oil depots in the Stavropol region at the same time, while regular forces struck another fuel-sector facility. Precise hits were recorded on three Russian shadow fleet tankers in the Black Sea, part of an effort to push the cost of the war back onto Russia itself.
The Caspian Pipeline Consortium, which carries Kazakh oil to Russia's Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, said its terminal was hit and two tankers were damaged, forcing a suspension of loading. Stavropol's governor reported a drone attack that sparked a fire in an industrial park. No injuries or spills were reported in those incidents.
In a Telegram message, Zelensky noted that in the past week alone Russia had used about fourteen hundred strike drones, more than sixteen hundred guided bombs and ninety-nine missiles of various types against Ukraine. The emergencies ministry said a logistics hub in the Bucha district near Kyiv was also hit, with two people injured. The tempo points to a grinding and escalating campaign on both sides of the front.
With neither side signalling restraint, the question is whether strikes on Russia's export infrastructure will shift Moscow's calculus in a way sanctions have not, as the toll on Ukrainian cities keeps climbing.
The metric that matters over the coming weeks is Russian export volume through Novorossiysk, not the nightly interception rate over Kyiv. Ukraine's tanker and depot strikes are quietly the more strategic move, because they raise the cost of the war for Moscow's budget rather than only its public opinion.
