Paper and cardboard are among the most successfully recycled materials in the world, yet a single sticky label or plastic coating can undermine the entire process, contaminating batches and damaging the machines that handle them.
Adhesives and coatings, known in the industry as stickies, cause outsize trouble. They can foul recycling equipment, lower the quality of the resulting pulp, and in the worst case cause a whole batch to be rejected. With roughly three quarters of paper and board consumed in Europe already recycled, even a small failure rate wastes enormous volumes of material.
The pressure to fix this is growing. A new European packaging regulation taking effect in August requires all packaging to be at least seventy percent recyclable by 2030, rising to eighty percent from 2038, while German law is tightening reporting and licensing rules. For manufacturers, non-compliance carries rising fines.
Three German firms believe the answer is to abandon adhesive altogether. Fraunhofer, a research organisation, launched a project in 2023 to develop a laser-based heating process that bonds paper packaging without any foreign material. Researchers say the method could reach the market within two years if they find an industry partner, and they exhibited the work at a major packaging trade show in Dusseldorf this year.
Engineering company Hermann Ultraschall, meanwhile, acquired rights in 2023 to an ultrasonic sealing technique it compares to welding. Its business development lead says the firm is in active discussions with several large players about moving the technology into mass production.
Removing glue and labels tackles one of the quiet barriers to a circular economy. If packaging can be sealed, printed and shipped without materials that defeat recycling, far more of it can be reprocessed at high quality. The innovation also reflects Germany's concentration of packaging expertise, centred on its so-called Packaging Valley.
For now the techniques are not yet mainstream, but they point to a future in which the humble cardboard box is designed from the outset to return cleanly to the paper stream rather than contaminate it.
The episode is a reminder that technical systems rarely fail in isolation; the consequences tend to cascade into regulation, trust, and the incentives that govern the next round of investment.
For policymakers, the challenge is to set guardrails without chilling the innovation that made the technology valuable in the first place.
Engineers on the ground note that the failure mode was foreseeable, the kind of edge case that slips through when speed of delivery is prioritised over depth of review.
